BIOGRAPHY

Mister Denham, founding member of the New
British Naives, began painting twenty-five
years ago in Hong Kong, when his wife wanted
something ‘Cheerful’ to brighten the walls of their high-rise
teaching apartment in Kowloon.

He was born in 1946, at a time when rural farming
communities in England were about to undergo
sweeping post-war changes, and the nation’s
youth were on the verge of reshaping traditional
social values, at all levels.

Entirely self-taught, his paintings [and the stories
which accompany them] reflect the healthy bucolic
spirit of those transitional times, and are presented
in a bright, splendidly original way.
