Derek was born in Birmingham in 1950, and was brought up a couple of streets
away from the Naïve artist, and
close friend of Mister Denham, Frank Smith.
His
school days were dominated by football, and during senior school he played for
both District and County teams. He signed for West Bromwich
Albion, and played for their Youth Team for two seasons. He became Head Boy at
school, and did well in his exams – especially in Art and Woodwork, but the
balancing act of studying and football training proved too much, and the
training won. He made a solid oak rocking chair as
one of his exam pieces, but couldn’t fit it onto the local bus to take it home
as a present for his mum. Undaunted, he decided to strengthen his neck for
heading the ball, by balancing the chair on his head and carrying it the mile
and a half home.
Derek has lived in Dorset for the last twenty-four years, and works in the
aerospace
industry. After losing both his mum and dad, he began painting in 1998, almost
as a solace. He is self-taught, and his
paintings reflect a whimsical sense of humour. In his own words…… “For me
the
key emotions are humility and compassion….and if my efforts make you smile,
then you’ve grasped all that is intended”.
