The NewThe 'New British Naives' Peter Denham, Frank Smith, Frank Bently, John Hayward
We are a small, independent, unfinanced group of self-taught narrative painters who strongly believe that Naïve art has an important and valuable contribution to make to the artistic heritage of our nation.
We believe that its sincerity of purpose, non-confrontational imagery and accessibility, represent the true spirit of the ordinary population and its history, and that this should be recognised and supported at all levels.
We believe that a National Museum of Naïve Art should be established to collect, house and preserve quality work within the genre, for the pleasure, entertainment and education of present and future generations, and that this should be a freely accessible resource, in perpetuity.
We have long been committed to bringing this about, and have already established an archival collection of some importance.
We are constructively engaged in developing international relationships with similar Naïve artists from all walks of life, persuasions and ethnicities, and in documenting their achievements.
We believe that an important function of the National Museum must be to freely showcase the work of British Naive artists, and to host and exchange international solo and group exhibitions.
As individuals within the New British Naives, we are actively involved in helping others to start the creation of their own narrative artwork.
